Did you dream of becoming an astronaut, a test pilot, racecar drive, high wire trapeze artist or other such exciting profession as a child?  While all of those occupations might be pretty darn exciting, they can’t seriously be expected to hold a candle to the fast-paced, exciting career of credit authorizer, checker or clerk.  Oh yes, it is as exciting as it sounds- every bit of it.  These lucky few check to determine is someone is creditworthy.  That’s right, they are living the dream.
 

Career Facts:

Sadly, there are expected to be less jobs created in this industry than in prior years, as a result the rate of growth for a credit authorizer, checker or clerk is expected to be slower than average.  The reason for this is those darn computers!  Computers are increasingly making the process of banks sticking it to the little guy over and over and over easier and more efficient.  And who doesn’t want a more efficient way of screwing customers?

 

Career Opportunities and Job Outlook- Average:

While the overall growth in the industry is expected to be below average the odds of getting a job should be good.  The primary reason is that many workers are moving onto other positions.  So while computers might be reducing the number of these dream jobs, at least there will still be openings.  However, it is important to consider these specifics before beginning your career planning or job search.

A Day in The Life:

Someone has to have the enormous privilege of approving someone making $7.35 an hour for a Sam’s Club Card.  Of course, that card has a twenty-three percent interest rate that balloons to twenty-eight percent with one missed payment.  Why it’s the new American way.  This person is the credit authorizer, checker or clerk, and do they ever have fun!  Their days are spent analyzing requests related to credit, credit and more credit.  Increasingly, however, like something out of a science-fiction film, the darn computers are coming in and destroying this dream job of dream jobs. 
 

Average Salary:

As of May 2008, the average salary for credit, authorizes, checkers and clerks was about $30,000 per year.  Obviously, many in this extremely rewarding and mind-bogglingly exciting profession would work for free. However, the $30,000 is still a nice token of appreciate.

Career Training and Qualifications:

Until the cold, dark hand of computers completely eradicate this profession, those who seek to enter the exciting world of credit gatekeeper can enjoy all of that power with a high-school diploma.  Employers often look for people who are madly passionate about credit.  Having a mad, insane love of all things credit can go a long way towards landing a job in this field.  If, however, this proves impossible, there are always less exciting options such as being an astronaut.
