So you want to be a lodging manager. One of the first steps that one needs to take is perfecting before your job search is what is generally referred to as “the creepy stare.” If you already have a decent creepy stare, then you most certainly have a leg up on the competition. Not everyone can get the creepy stare just right, but it is most definitely a requirement, especially if you are working the night shift. Now “fancier” hotels and such may not require employees to use the creepy stare, but you can rest assured that they most definitely know it.

Another skill that should be mastered is the ability to impress upon every customer that you already suspect that they are a troublemaker and a criminal. In general, one wants to give an overall impression that says, “I am watching you.” Which is of course, usually, impossible but most customers do not realize this fact.

Lodging managers work to make sure that the hotels, motels, RV camps and other related types of inns are working properly and don’t burn to the ground. Much of the job centers around acting as though you actually care that the hotel, motel or other establishment is dangerously filthy and that you will “get right on that.” This part of the job is key, for while you might be working in a giant health hazard, it is important that your customers are kept clueless about how filthy everything actually happens to be. If you have some sort of “moral” problem with that, then cease your career planning, as lodging manager careers are most definitely not for you.

The career outlook for lodging managers is expected to be good between now and 2016. In 2007, for example, there were over six hundred hotels opened, which means many new jobs for lodging managers.

A Day in The Life:

The day of the lodging manager is spent rotating from creepy stares to overseeing personnel, purchasing supplies, such as soap which is generally worthless in a hotel, motel, etc, to hiring new staff and establishing staff schedules.

Your average lodging manager can be expected to work long hours, often more than forty hours per week. If there is a serious problem, a lodging manager may have to go into work regardless of the time of day or night.

Average Salary:

The average salary for a lodging manager is about $42,000, with the top ten percent earning about $82,500 per year. It is rumored that lodging managers who have perfected the creepy stare can earn more in some locations.

Besides attending creepy stare academy, lodging managers often have other education as well. Larger hotel chains for example often look to hire managers who have their bachelor’s degrees in a field like hospitality management.
