Yes Virginia, you can make a living as a drag queen.  Your job search is over!  For those of you who are uninformed, a drag queen is a man who dresses up as a woman (usually a manly or relatively unattractive female celebrity) and proceeds to put on a show.  Usually this involves singing the songs associated with that female celebrity or lip-syncing.  It is not uncommon for drag queens to seek out straight men that were “dragged” into the club or venue where they are performing.  Once they have spotted said man who was “dragged” to the performance, they then work to make him as uncomfortable as possible.

Career Facts:

The general impression is that all drag queens are also gay.  This isn’t always the case. However, if being mistaken for a homosexual bothers you, this job might not be the right one for you.  Also, if you are not comfortable in a dress, again, you might want to look elsewhere for employment.  As a drag queen you are most definitely a performer, meaning that one must be able to captivate an audience in some fashion, whether it is through song, humor, style, or all of the above.

What the future holds for the drag queen is hard to say.  As American society continues to open up to new ideas and lifestyles, the role of the drag queen may either become more or less pronounced.

It takes a lot of work for a man to effectively transform into a drag queen, and it’s not cheap.  This means a great deal of work on hair; make up, dress and often strategic taping.

Average Salary:

Due to the fact that this is an entertainment industry job, what a drag queen can earn varies greatly depending upon popularity and the quality of the performance. 

Career Training and Qualifications:

Since this is an entertainment job and drag queens are performers, it can take years to perfect an acts.  However, beyond the willingness to wear a dress and sing, dance and perform as a woman, there are no other real qualifications.  The career-planning path to become a drag queen can be simple indeed if you have got the right level of panache and gumption.
