There is nothing more fun that being a big shot. If you are looking to be a big shot, then maybe a career as a marketing manager might be just what you’re looking for in life.  Marketing managers work to promote products and services.  In this capacity, they develop strategies for how best to help companies market a given product or service and determine pricing structures.  To this end, marketing managers work to locate and identify new markets and potential clients in order to increase company profits. 

Those interested in adding marketing manager to their career planning or job search should realize that a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration or marketing is seen as an absolute must.  In some more technical industries, applicants may need to hold an engineering degree in addition to a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration.

 

Career Facts:

This can be a high stress job that requires long hours and a good deal of travel.  If you are looking for a low-key, low-stress job, then this is definitely not the job you are looking for.  Most marketing managers work in excess of the normal forty-hour workweek and will often far exceed the forty-hour workweek.  Additionally, marketing managers may be required to spend substantial times on the road and deal with significant deadline pressures.  Being a marketing manager does pay well, but the hours are long and the stress can be substantial.

 

Career Opportunities and Job Outlook- Average:

The number of marketing managers is expected to be roughly about average between 2008 and 2018 at twelve percent.  This number will increase somewhat more rapidly for sales managers who should see a rate of growth of around fifteen percent over the same time period.

If you like money and you like the idea of being so busy that you don’t realize your life is passing you by at warp speed, then you have found your calling.  You will get to act like a mover and shaker as you boss around various employees and underlings.  You will have to spend a considerable amount of time in college and might actually have to do the work to acquire some actual skills.  But if you thrive on acting like the big shot, then this is the job for you!

The average salary for marketing managers is about $109,000 per year.  However, one also has to factor in the very long hours when considering this annual average paycheck.  Bonuses for marketing managers can average about ten percent of their overall salaries.

A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration is usually seen as the minimal educational requirements for this job.  For those seeking employment in the tech sector, expect to toss an engineering degree on top of your business administration degree as well.
