Career Advice on How to Become A Men’s Underwear Designer

There is no need to mix words on this career.  Being a men’s underwear designer is a pretty interesting job if you are woman or gay man.  Yet, with that stated, an underwear designer is expected to have all the same qualifications and skills any other fashion designer.

Career Facts:

Men’s underwear designers should be able to demonstrate that they can indeed design clothing.  While it is possible that every now and again someone shows up to a clothing company and says, “I want to design underwear and I have no skill,” most of the time some background in fashion is necessary.

Career Opportunities and Job Outlook- Poor:

The overall job growth outlook for fashion designers, which will include men’s underwear designers, is not great.  Between 2008 and 2018, the overall job growth rate is expected to be about one percent.

Job Outlook is Poor

A Day in The Life:

This is not to state that being a men’s underwear designer is not a bit different than designing many other types of garments.  After all, a men’s underwear designer can be expected to spend a lot of time working on fitting men while they are in their underwear and adjusting the way the underwear fits.  Clearly, this level of “interaction” is not entirely common in other aspects of the fashion industry.

Average Salary:

The average fashion designer can expect to average about $61,000 per year.

Career Training and Qualifications:

It is common for fashion designers to have associate degrees or bachelor’s degrees in the fashion.  This degree, along with a portfolio of their work, is usually necessary to get one’s foot in the door of the competitive fashion world.  Knowing what looks good and what fits well is always important, but may be even more important for a men’s underwear designer.  Ask any man and he will quickly tell you that a pair of underwear that do not fit might as well be a torture rack.  Due to this rather pragmatic element, you can expect men’s underwear designers to take the fitting aspect of their work very seriously indeed.
